The starting point of the three branches which make up the Route of the White Villages, Villamartín, is notable for being a natural crossroads, which is why it has seen human habitation since prehistoric times. The Matrera Castle, the Parish Church of Nuestra Señora de la Virtudes, the Church of San Francisco, and the Palace of Los Ríos and Los Topete, make up part of the rich historical legacy of this beautiful village. The picturesque plazas and streets of Villamartin become the setting of traditional festivals such as the San Mateo Animal Fair, which has been declared an Event of National Tourist Interest. The most popular dishes of the local gastronomy are the brezas, the asparagus and tomato soups and of course, the traditional handmade cakes and pastries. The Municipal History Museum, which belongs to the network of Andalucian Museums, offers a historical perspective of the district and its traditions through the remains found in the area. In the municipality of Villamartín is the Dolmen of Alberite, one of the oldest megalithic structures in the peninsula. Next to it is the archaeological site of Torrevieja, whose remains have revealed that the place was inhabited by the Neolithic, Tartessic, Turdetan and Andaluci cultures, and gradually evolved into what is today known as Villamartín.
